Optometrists are health care provider who specializes in the examination and diagnosis of the basic and advanced refractive errors seen in ophthalmic practice. In addition to refractive error they are also concerned with the management of low visual aid patients and assessment or orthoptic cases.
Optometrists provide most primary vision care. They examine people’s eyes to diagnose visual refractive error, test their visual acuity, depth of vision and color the perception, and ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Optometrists prescribe eye glasses and contact lenses and provide vision therapy and low-vision rehabilitation. Optometrists analyze test results. They also refer patients to other doctors when they recognize symptoms and diagnose diseases such as glaucoma, high blood pressure or diabetes mellitus.
